What Is Breast Reduction and How Does It Work?
Breast reduction always includes a breast lift (mastopexy) to ensure a firmer, more natural shape. During the surgery, the plastic surgeon removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin while reshaping the breasts to match the patient’s body proportions.
In certain cases where large breasts cause significant health problems, the procedure may be partially or fully covered by health insurance. Eligibility is determined by a plastic surgeon after an in-person evaluation.
When Is the Right Time for Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reduction is suitable for women aged 18+ who are in good general health. Ideal candidates are those who experience:
- chronic back or neck pain
- skin irritation in the breast crease
- limitations during sports or movement
- significant breast asymmetry
- difficulty maintaining proper posture
Stable weight is important—preferably after weight loss or pregnancy. After breastfeeding, most surgeons recommend waiting at least 12 months.
There is no upper age limit for breast reduction; overall health is the key factor.
How Breast Reduction Surgery Is Performed
During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision around the areola and removes excess tissue and skin. The nipple-areola complex remains attached to a blood-supplied pedicle and is then repositioned higher on the breast.
The resulting scar typically has the shape of an inverted “T” (around the areola and vertically down the breast). Despite the reduction, the goal is always natural, proportional breasts, not a flat chest.
Recovery After Breast Reduction
Most clients arrive at OB Care Clinic with completed preoperative tests, but these can also be arranged on the day of surgery. The operation lasts approximately 2–3 hours. After waking from anesthesia, the patient stays overnight at the clinic. Upon discharge, drains are removed and the patient receives:
- a postoperative compression bra
- dressings
- pain medication + desinfectant
- detailed instructions for home care
Personal Experience of Mrs. Jana
“I spent a long time deciding to undergo breast reduction. I am hypermobile and suffered from back pain, and I was unhappy with the volume of my breasts in proportion to my body. Unfortunately, my breasts were not large enough to qualify for insurance coverage, so I chose to pay for the procedure myself. I attended three consultations in total, and I was most impressed by MUDr. Skála. It wasn’t just his pleasant and direct manner, but mainly his understanding of why I wanted this change and the problems my breasts were causing me.
Before the surgery, I was quite nervous, but after my consultation with Dr. Skála, I left smiling. He was able to answer all my questions and even lighten the mood with humor. The entire procedure went smoothly, and everyone at the clinic was very kind.
At first, I had mixed feelings about the results. My breasts were swollen and almost looked larger than before. The shape was beautiful, but my main goal had been to reduce the size. Over time, however, everything settled, and now my breasts look wonderful.
If I had one minor remark, it would be about the final size—I wouldn’t have minded if Dr. Skála had removed a bit more. I went from a 65J to a 65H, which doesn’t sound like a huge change, but the difference is noticeable. I understand that agreeing on the exact size can be tricky because everyone imagines a “C cup” differently, and I couldn’t have predicted what removing a certain number of grams would translate to.
Results of the Surgery:
Everyone comments on how much slimmer I look, even though the total reduction was only 400 g—it really makes a difference.
My physiotherapist confirmed that my posture is improving. I used to hunch over because standing upright with very large breasts could look awkward.
Clothes fit better, and it’s easier to find properly fitting lingerie.
At home, I can wear just a sports bra!
I can wear strapless bras and swimsuits!
Because my breasts are now well supported, I no longer get marks from bras.
Movement is much easier, and nothing gets in the way during sports, even without a bra.
I can fully confirm Dr. Skála’s words: the only thing women regret after breast reduction is that they didn’t do it sooner.”
