Summer is the perfect time for holidays, swimming, and enjoying the sunshine. However, if you have recently undergone plastic surgery, bariatric surgery, or any other surgical procedure, it is important to pay extra attention to your scars. Exposure to the sun can negatively affect both the healing process and the final appearance of your scar.
Why should you protect your scars from the sun?
Fresh scars contain less protective pigment than the surrounding skin, making them much more sensitive to UV radiation. Direct sun exposure may lead to permanent darkening of the scar (hyperpigmentation), prolonged redness, or a less favourable cosmetic result. These changes can remain visible for years.
As a general rule, scars should be protected from direct sunlight for at least 12 months after surgery.
How to care for your scars during summer
Use a high SPF sunscreen
If your scar cannot be covered with clothing, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50+ and reapply it regularly throughout the day.
Keep your scar covered
Whenever possible, protect the scar with lightweight clothing, swimwear, or a hat if the scar is located on the face or scalp. Physical protection remains the most effective way to prevent UV damage.
Consider silicone scar therapy
Silicone gels and silicone sheets help maintain optimal moisture levels, soften scar tissue, and may improve the final cosmetic appearance of the scar.
Massage your scar
Once your surgeon advises that it is safe to do so, gentle scar massage can improve tissue flexibility and support healthy scar maturation.
Can you sunbathe after surgery?
Once the incision has fully healed, spending time outdoors is generally safe. However, direct sunlight on the scar itself should still be avoided. The newer the scar, the more important consistent sun protection becomes.
Patience is key
Scar healing is a gradual process. The final appearance of a scar is usually assessed 12 to 18 months after surgery. Proper scar care, consistent sun protection, and following your surgeon's recommendations can significantly improve the final result.
