When people think of plastic surgery, they often picture women. But that is changing. More and more men are turning to plastic surgeons – not because they want to look like movie stars, but because they want to feel more confident, look refreshed and finally address something that has been bothering them for years.
The most common concerns include tired-looking eyes, excessive sweating, enlarged breasts and, increasingly, loose skin after significant weight loss.
“Even ten years ago, men represented only a smaller proportion of our patients. Today, their numbers are steadily growing. Most men are not looking to completely change their appearance. They simply want to address something that has been bothering them or affecting their confidence for a long time,” says Dr. Martin Skála, plastic surgeon at OB Care clinic.
When your eyelids make you look ten years older
Drooping eyelids are one of the most common reasons why men visit a plastic surgeon. The eyes are one of the first things people notice, and this is also where signs of ageing can become particularly visible. Many men are not concerned about wrinkles as such. Instead, they feel that they constantly look tired, exhausted or even angry. In some cases, drooping upper eyelids can also restrict the field of vision and contribute to headaches or other discomfort.
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a relatively straightforward procedure with a usually short recovery period. The goal is not to change the character of the face, but to create a fresher, more rested appearance.
“Men often come to us because they feel they look tired or older than they actually feel. Eyelid surgery can noticeably refresh the appearance without making it obvious that the patient has undergone cosmetic surgery. The result should look natural and masculine,” explains MUDr. Martin Skála.
Excessive sweating: when a wet shirt becomes a problem
Another issue that can seriously affect everyday life is excessive sweating. A business meeting, presentation at work or first date can become uncomfortable when visible sweat patches appear within minutes.
Fortunately, there are effective ways to treat excessive sweating. One of them is botulinum toxin, which can significantly reduce sweating in the treated area for several months.
The treatment takes only a few minutes and is performed on an outpatient basis. For many men, reducing excessive sweating means greater comfort and confidence in everyday situations.
Gynecomastia: a problem men rarely talk about
Gynecomastia – enlargement of male breast tissue – is one of the more common concerns among men, yet it is still rarely discussed openly.
Some men avoid swimming pools, saunas or changing rooms because of it. Others wear loose clothing to hide their chest. The condition can affect both teenagers and adults and may have a number of different causes, including hormonal changes, genetics, certain medications or excess body fat.
If the underlying cause cannot be addressed conservatively, surgery may be an effective solution. The procedure removes excess glandular tissue and, where necessary, can be combined with liposuction to achieve a flatter, more masculine chest.
“Gynecomastia is much more common than most people realise. Yet men often talk about it only after living with the problem for years. We see patients who have avoided swimming pools or changing rooms their entire lives. After surgery, the change in their confidence can be just as significant as the physical change,” says MUDr. Martin Skála.
Losing weight is not always the final step
Weight loss has become a major topic in recent years. More men are changing their lifestyles, using modern medical treatments for obesity or undergoing bariatric surgery. Some manage to lose tens of kilograms. But after significant weight loss, there can be one problem that even regular exercise cannot solve: excess skin around the abdomen. Loose abdominal skin can interfere with sport and movement, cause irritation or hygiene problems, and simply prevent someone from feeling that their physical transformation is complete.
This is why abdominoplasty – or a tummy tuck – is becoming increasingly popular among men after major weight loss. The procedure removes excess skin and can help reshape and tighten the abdominal area. For many men, it represents the final step after a major weight-loss journey.
“In recent years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of men who have lost substantial amounts of weight through lifestyle changes, bariatric surgery or modern medical treatment for obesity. Excess abdominal skin is often the final obstacle preventing them from being fully satisfied with their transformation. For these patients, abdominoplasty can be the final step in their journey towards a new body,” says MUDr. Martin Skála.
It is not about vanity. It is about feeling comfortable in your own skin.
Men are increasingly open about their appearance and the things they would like to change. It does not necessarily mean they are becoming more vain. Quite often, it is simply about feeling comfortable in their own skin.
Whether it is drooping eyelids, excessive sweating, gynecomastia or loose skin after significant weight loss, modern plastic surgery offers solutions that can improve both appearance and quality of life.
And perhaps that is the real reason why more and more men are choosing to do something about the things that have been bothering them for years.
