Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure that helps remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area while tightening weakened abdominal muscles. It is most commonly performed on patients after significant weight loss, women after pregnancy, or individuals whose abdominal skin has become loose due to aging or genetic factors.
Proper preparation for surgery is very important. It helps reduce the risk of complications, supports smoother healing, and contributes to achieving the best possible results.
Stable Weight Is Key
Abdominoplasty is not a weight-loss procedure. The best results are achieved in patients who already have a stable body weight and want to address mainly excess skin or separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis). For example, if you have undergone bariatric surgery or experienced significant weight loss, it is recommended to wait until your weight has been stable for at least several months. This helps minimize the risk of further skin laxity.
Stop Smoking
Smoking significantly slows down healing and increases the risk of post-operative complications. Nicotine reduces blood flow to the tissues, which can negatively affect scar healing and the overall quality of the final result.
It is recommended to stop smoking at least 3–4 weeks before surgery and to continue avoiding smoking during the recovery period.
“I didn’t underestimate the preparation for the surgery. I quit smoking, adjusted my diet, and prepared everything I would need for recovery at home in advance. Thanks to that, the recovery was much easier than I expected. During the first few days after the surgery, I mainly rested and followed my doctors’ recommendations. I wore the compression garment consistently and gradually returned to my normal activities. The result motivated me even more – my abdomen is firmer, and I finally feel comfortable wearing clothes I used to avoid.”
Inform Your Doctor About All Medications
Before surgery, it is important to inform your doctor about all medications and dietary supplements you are taking. Some substances can increase the risk of bleeding or affect the course of the operation.
Patients are usually advised to temporarily stop taking certain products before surgery, such as:
- blood-thinning medications
- some anti-inflammatory drugs
- dietary supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids
- ginkgo biloba or high doses of vitamin E
Any decision about stopping medication should always be made by your doctor.
Complete Pre-operative Examination
Preparation for abdominoplasty also includes a pre-operative medical examination. This typically involves laboratory tests and an overall assessment of your health condition. The goal is to ensure that the procedure is safe for the patient. During the consultation, the surgeon will also explain the course of the operation, expected results, and recommendations for the recovery period.
For our international patients, all pre-operative tests are performed on the morning of the surgery. If you have any allergies, take medications, or have other health conditions, please consult your general practitioner for advice before traveling abroad for surgery.
Prepare Your Home for Recovery
After surgery, it is important to allow your body enough time to rest and heal. Movement may be limited during the first few days, so it is helpful to prepare your home environment in advance.
It is recommended to:
- prepare a comfortable place for resting
- arrange help from a family member or friend for the first few days
- prepare loose and comfortable clothing
- avoid planning physically demanding activities
Compression Garment After Surgery
After abdominoplasty, patients wear a special compression garment that helps reduce swelling, supports healing, and stabilizes the operated area. It is usually recommended to wear it for several weeks according to the surgeon’s instructions. One piece of garment is always included in your price.
Realistic Expectations
An important part of preparation is also open communication with your surgeon about your expectations. A tummy tuck can significantly improve the shape and firmness of the abdomen, but results may vary depending on the condition of the skin, muscles, and overall health of the patient.
Abdominoplasty can be an important step toward improving both appearance and self-confidence. Proper preparation and following your doctor’s recommendations play a key role in ensuring that the procedure is safe and that the results are as good as possible.
Abdominoplasty After Bariatric Surgery
Patients who undergo bariatric surgery often experience significant weight loss, which can lead to major improvements in both health and quality of life. However, substantial weight reduction is frequently associated with excess and loose skin in the abdominal area that can no longer retract naturally. In these cases, abdominoplasty can be the next step on the journey toward a complete body transformation.
A tummy tuck after bariatric surgery helps remove overhanging skin, improve the shape of the abdomen, and make everyday life more comfortable. Excess skin can cause not only aesthetic concerns but also hygiene issues, skin irritation, and limitations during movement or physical activities.
When Is the Right Time for a Tummy Tuck After Weight Loss?
Surgeons usually recommend undergoing abdominoplasty only once the patient’s weight has stabilized. Ideally, the patient: has maintained a stable weight for at least 6–12 months, has reached a long-term sustainable weight, is in good overall health. The main reason is to minimize the risk of further skin laxity or changes in the final surgical result.
Part of Comprehensive Post-Bariatric Care
Abdominoplasty is often part of a broader field of post-bariatric surgery, which addresses excess skin on other areas of the body as well, such as the thighs, arms, or chest. The goal of these procedures is not only to improve appearance but also to enhance comfort in everyday life. Many patients report that after the removal of excess skin they can move more freely, exercise more comfortably, and feel significantly more confident overall.
