Having a few extra pounds may not always hurt. Fuller shapes are attractive, as well as a full décolletage, which is aesthetically pleasing in girls. Sometimes, nature is too generous and an excessive bust leads to back and spine pain and is restrictive in sports activities. In such cases, breast reduction or rather breast uplift with reduction, is appropriate.

“The image of the ideal size of a woman's breast is a matter of personal taste and, let's say, the fashion views of the time. Over the years, the ideal of beauty of the female body has been constantly changing. However, whether the curves are slim or full, the truth is that women with large breasts often come to us and not only suffer from sagging, but also the health problems associated with excessive breast volume,” says Dr. Martin Skála, plastic surgeon from OB Care Clinic.

Breast reduction and breast uplift always go hand in hand. It would not work otherwise. It is basically always a modelling procedure, only extended by the removal of excess mammary gland, adipose tissue and loose skin including subcutaneous tissue. In many cases this procedure is recommended by a doctor due to the health risks associated with large breasts. The plastic surgery is covered by health insurance in such cases.

When is the right time

Breast reduction surgery can be performed in every healthy woman over 18 years of age. Obstacles to surgery may include poor medical condition, such as some serious heart, circulatory, lung and respiratory or liver diseases.

Stable weight is important in order for a woman to undergo breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty. Mammaplasty is also frequently indicated after pregnancy. In such a case, it is necessary to wait for up to 1 year after the end of breastfeeding.

Sometimes excessive breasts are problematic even in very young girls. However, breast surgery, both reduction and augmentation, always requires the age of majority, because the overall hormonal development and the associated growth and development of the breasts will be complete only at that time.

Many women also undergo breast reduction at an advanced age. There is no specific age limit. The general condition and health are determining factors rather than the date of birth.

How is breast reduction performed

In the most common type of surgery, the areola with the nipple is separated by a circumferential cut from the surrounding skin and left on the so-called stalk (parts of the mammary gland). After the removal of excess mammary gland and breast skin, the retained tissues are modelled to the desired shape and the areola with the nipple are moved upward. As a result, the scar around the areola leads down the breast in the shape of an inverted "T".

“We can say that it is possible to 'make' a completely flat chest, no matter the size of the breasts. But the result would certainly not look good. The size and shape of breasts after the surgery should fit naturally to the figure of the woman,” says Dr. Martin Skála from OB Care.

Course of breast reduction surgery

“Most of the patients come to our OB Care Clinic with a complete pre-operative examination. If it is not the case, the day begins with this examination. This is followed by a consultation with a plastic surgeon, when all the necessary points are again discussed and the surgeon prepares drawings on the patient's body for the surgery. The operation usually takes 2 to 3 hours. Afterwards, the patient is moved to the ICU, where the patient is monitored for further 2-3 hours before she fully wakes up after anaesthesia. Patients usually stay at the clinic for 2 days after breast reduction. On the day of discharge, we remove the drains during the check-up, the client gets a post-operative bra, bandage material for home care and medication for possible pain relief. It is recommended for the patients to leave home accompanied,” says MUDr. Skála.

With the standard healing process, the client returns for a check-up 2 weeks after the surgery. If everything is OK, no further check-ups are needed.

“In September 2018 I underwent breast reduction. I am really impressed and I have no words to describe how happy I am. I was so nervous before I had the first look in the mirror when the bandages were being removed. It was a very emotional experience for me which I will never forget. My confidence was zero, I was paranoid. My friend recommended me the OB Care Clinic and I am really glad that I chose them. Dr. Skála is an amazing, funny man who is fantastic in his work. Dr. Martin has brought my lost self-confidence back to a new level and totally changed my life! I recommend Dr. Skála and  the OB Care Clinic to everyone”, says Martina, a satisfied client of OB Care.
