Rhinoplasty

Who Is It For?

Nose physiognomy significantly influences the overall face expression. Rhinoplasty (nose surgery) can easily and permanently solve cosmetic problems with the nose shape, size, width or proportions. This may significantly help the client feel more comfortable and self-confident. A positive side effect of the operation is usually also easier breathing.

The preoperative consultation is very detailed – the surgeon discusses the motivation and expectations with the client. It is very important to consider every case individually and pay attention to the general face features, the size and shape of the nose and bone, etc. so that the operation improves the looks but does not cost the clients their identity. Nose reshaping is not advisable until the nose bone growth is finished, a proximate limit being the age of eighteen.

How Is It Done?

Nose reshaping surgery is performed through the nostrils, which is the reason why it usually does not leave any visible scars. It involves loosening the soft parts, cartilage and bones and their reshaping. If the bone structure reshaping is not necessary, only the soft parts can be remodelled.

Surgery

Nose surgery takes between one and two hours and it is usually performed under general anaesthesia, or by client’s request under local anaesthesia.

After Surgery

The client stays at the clinic overnight. Nasal tampons are inserted in the nostrils – these will be taken out within three to five days after the operation. The nose is also fixated from outside by a splint which is worn for two weeks and might be necessary for two more weeks only at night in order to protect the nose. When the splint is removed, the patients start applying pressure massages they have been taught at the clinic. The client also needs to avoid situations that could lead to a possible nose injury (minimum six to eight weeks), contact sports, sun exposure, extreme temperatures and sauna.

Until the bandages are removed, it is important to rest. The ideal position is on the back, with the legs and body slightly elevated, to reduce, as much as possible, any post-operative complications such as bleeding, haematomas or swelling. However, some of these are likely to appear, even in the eyelid area. Cooling with ice compresses helps to reduce swelling, as well as medication that might be recommended by the physician.

You should avoid sudden movements and bending forward as this may cause blood pressure in the head to rise, which could result in the rupture of a vessel and bleeding. Cleaning the nose should be done carefully, only with soft pads and not by blowing.

Post-operative Instructions

Possible Reactions

In some cases your temperature may slightly rise for a two to three days. An analgesic can easily ease the discomfort connected to any possible pain in the area operated upon.

New nose looks better in 2-3 weeks and usually continues to improve for many months.

Nasal tip drops to its permanent position in 3-6 months.

Final results may not be apparent for a year or more.

Possible Complications

Post-operative bleeding, or bleeding caused by insufficient post-operative care at home

Swelling, Prolonged healing, Haematomas, Infection of the wound

Imperfect effect resulting from non-observance of the post-operative instructions

Back To Normal

Following uneventful recovery, it is normally possible to return to work and resume customary activities (excluding exercise) two weeks of the operation. Normal physical activity, including exercise, can be resumed after two months.

Result

The final result can be expected around six to twelve months after the operation. The resulting effect is permanent.

Extra

Nose job is always planned personally according to the client’s needs – some might only need the soft parts remodelling, others might need bone reconstruction or a hump correction and there are also special cases of posttraumatic states.
