Complete Face Lift

Who Is It For?

One of the natural consequences of aging is skin sagging in the midface, the creation of loose skin areas and related deep creases, which can be the cause of changes in a person’s main features. The face might look tired and older than it actually is. An operation called face lift is performed in order to achieve a younger look, especially after forty. During the operation excess skin is removed and major wrinkles are smoothed. The most effective outcome of a face lift is especially seen in the jowls and in the neck area.

Reducing wrinkles and improving loose, sagging skin, the operation comes in a variety of forms. It is performed either as full face lift, which involves the area below the eyes and neck; or as a mini face lift, involving the mid-face area while omitting the neck. If necessary it can be combined with eyelid surgery and a brow lift. It is important to highlight that special attention is paid to the preservation of natural facial features.

Get Prepared

Make sure you will get time off work (depending on the operation and the nature of your job). You will need support and help from the family and friends in the recovery period (avoiding physically demanding jobs, important social events etc.); if needed (and possible), arranging  for children care.

No acute illnesses should occur in the period of at least 3 weeks prior to the planned face lift surgery (a viral illness, a cold etc.). If so, it is necessary to inform us.

One week before the operation, do not take any medications containing acetylsalicyclic acid (such as Acylpyrin, Aspirin, Alnagon, Mironal etc.). It might increase bleeding during and after the face lift surgery.

Ideally, one month (minimum two weeks) before the face lift or neck lift procedure women should stop taking hormonal contraception or replacement in order to prevent thromboembolism.

Consult your GP or your surgeon in Prague regarding other medications you take regularly. Bring your usual medicine and pills, if possible in the original packaging.

It is recommended to stop or considerably reduce smoking two weeks before the operation. If you are a smoker don’t forget to bring nicotine patches with you.

Face lifting surgery requires the use of elastic garment after the procedure. You can either bring your own or you can buy them at the clinic. We recommend buying them after the consultation with your surgeon who will try the elastic garments on and decide which size and type is suitable for you.

Ideally, women should not have their period when operated. If they do, they need to inform their doctor.

How Is It Done?

During the face lif or neck lift operation underlying tissue structure is tightened and face and neck skin is redraped. Excess skin is removed. The incisions are made in hair-bearing areas near temples, and then they extend around earlobes and back to the hairline. The most complete face lift involves making the incision and redraping the skin behind tragus. In every kind of face lift procedure, the scar is hidden in natural lines and is barely conspicuous. During suturing non-absorbable or absorbable materials can be used. In the case of non-absorbable materials, the sutures must be extracted within two or three weeks after the operation, while absorbable sutures dissolve in the body on their own and their advantage is also the fact that the scar is finer.

There is also a mini facelift option - this method is suitable for a small decrease of jawls. Benefits of mini facelift: shorter incision and then shorter scar, smaller mobilization of the skin and thus smaller swelling and faster recovery. There is also a shorter surgery time and shorter anaesthetic. It is very often combined with upper and lower eyelid surgery. The elastic garment will have to be worn for three weeks.

Face lift surgery takes approximately two hours and is done under the combination of local anaesthetic and intravenous sedation (analgosedation). The client can also request a general anaesthetic.

After Surgery

The client usually stays at the clinic two nights – the postoperative care involves regular checking on the patient’s state and administering medicine. It is important to keep at rest and minimize head movements for one week when the bandages are removed. Swelling usually disappears within two or three weeks after the operation and the scars fade within three to six months.

Speaking, laughing and any movement of the mouth should be limited in the immediate post-operative period. You should avoid sudden movements and bending forwards as this may cause blood pressure in the head to rise, which could result in the rupture of a vessel and bleeding. In the first days following the face lift operation, it is advisable to have only pureed or liquid food which can be eaten without unnecessary movements of the mouth.
